What can I do at home?

1. Brush their teeth. Here is a video clip that will teach you how to brush your pet’s teeth: Click here to watch a video
2. Feed your pet a specialised diet that is designed to keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy. E.g. Hills t/d Dental Health.
3. Use a water additive designed to reduce the plaque that builds up on your pet’s teeth e.g. Aquadent
4. Give your pet something to chew on. “Greenies” are the best choice, but rawhide chews, chew toys and raw bones may also make a difference in reducing the build-up of plaque.
5. Have your vet check your pet’s teeth. At Bakers Hill Vets we always check your pet’s teeth at their yearly vaccination and health check. If your pet is prone to dental disease we may recommend dental check-ups more frequently than this. And of course, keep an eye out for any bad breath, inflammation of the gums and/or tartar (yellow staining) on the teeth, and make an appointment to have it checked out if you notice any of these things.
